ESPN....the home of the Spelling Bee?

ESPN....the home of the Spelling Bee?

By Tim Beggs ( Contact )   June 3, 2008

During the college football season you can almost see a game everynight on the all sports channel. Remember when college games were only played on saturdays. You can also get plenty of college basketball games during the regular season on ESPN.

The NBA, NFL and Major League Baseball also are shown on the network. Nascar, golf and tennis have all found time on ESPN as well. Sportscenter is a nightly ritual for some sports fans and I'll admit I tune in on a regular basis to get my sports fix.

I was scratching my head the other day when I saw the Spelling Bee on ESPN? It didn't suprise me because it's the same network that aired the Scrabble Championships a few years back. Nothing against the spelling bee, but I don't see the connection with the big sports daddy known as ESPN. I mean nothing says exciting sports action more than the spelling bee. Watching 12 year old kids tear up after missing a word is almost as fun as watching a big slam dunk, a walk off home run, or a game winning touchdown pass.

Is there another network that could find a home for the Spelling Bee? Next week on ESPN don't miss the Candyland Championship followed by the Yahtzee Grand Nationals. Check your local listings!

Believe it or not, the Bees do garner a LOT of attention (esp. lil' ol Samir). Do they belong on ESPN, maybe not, but I'd put them on ESPN-2
