A Day in the Life
People have asked me if I always wanted to be in radio when I was a kid. I guess I did. We have a big family and shared bedroom space with my brother Pete who would get mad when I listened to the radio at night. So I got a small transister radio and placed it under my pillow and listened to signals throughout the midwest and beyond. I was amazed by what I heard.
I was in student government in high school and never had trouble speaking in front of a class or the student body. I got involed in radio in college on the blazing 50 watt station that could be heard on campus and on a good night in parts of town. Looking back I remember how much fun I had in those "early" years. Don't get me wrong it's still fun, but those times were the best.
During my journey I've been fortunate to work with some very creative people in this business. It's the people that make the difference in this world. We have some of those talented individuals here in our family. Our leader is a Hall of Fame Broadcaster. Our News Department is award winning along with Justin Brown's On-Air work and Al Fagerli's sports play-by-play. They all were recognized by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association for their work and I'm proud to be affiliated with them.
Last week I had the chance to fill in for Al doing the sports. It's an intense week for me because my days began at the time when I'm normally going to bed. The 2am wake-up call was not easy, but the week seemed to fly by. I love the fast paced environment in the mornings on the radio. There's so much to do, you don't have time to think about it. You just do it and hope to do a respectable job. I'm happy with the job I did and look forward to the next opportunity to do so. I think Al is outstanding with what he does. I've listened to his work for many years and respect the dedication he puts in on the air and doing play-by-play. He knows local sports better than anyone I know. I guess that comes with time, but it also comes with hard work and a passion for what he does. I hope to "pinch hit" again for Al and hope to hit it out of the ballpark!
