The Real Deal

The Real Deal

By Tim Beggs ( Contact )   April 14, 2008

DW made a visit to our neck of the woods over the weekend. I'm glad there were alot of us who made the trip to the Club Tavern in Middleton. Dale Watson is the best kept secret in country music today. A few years back Big Red and I were on business in Platteville. During our ride he asked me if I ever heard of Dale Watson. I said that I had and that I really liked his music. There was an instant connection as we both sang parts of our favorite Dale Watson songs. Since then Big Red and the Honky Tonk Mafia has had plenty of opportunities to catch Dale play. As for his music, it's genuine, pure and real. It to me is what country music is all about. It's about songs that hit home and touch that place inside that make you happy and sad. It's about music that makes you tap your feet and sing along. Dale has a unique style that at times can sound very traditional with lots of rhythm and blues. It's honky tonk with rock and roll. It's got soul and western swing. It's rockabilly and americana all rolled up together. Dale Watson is the real deal and I would put him up against anyone out there today. Between the 1st and 2nd set my buddy JMac and I had some material to get signed. Dale remembered JMac and even said: "your from Janesville." I had some stuff for him to sign for Big Red as he had to leave early to get some shut eye before the Country Hall of Fame. Dale was thankful to Red, Junior and I for the "spins" on the air. He referenced Big Red and WJVL during the final set and even sang one for Red. Dale Watson is no Tim McGraw, Keith Urban or Craig Morgan. He's not Neal McCoy, Tracy Lawrence or Toby Keith. Those artists are who they are, but they aint country. In my book Dale Watson is what represents country music to me. No offense but the so called country music today is more like the "pop" music from the 80's. Thank god for Dale Watson! Image

Tim your blog was like reading it from a music critic in a magazine. Way to put it out there! If it weren't for Big Red first starting to play dale I don't think i'd know who Dale Watson was either. Now to break up the same LOOP of "singers under 40 usually" it's nice to here you and Jason also throw in the mix. I think I have almost every Dale Watson CD there is now and you guys are so right. His sad songs can bring a tear to your eye because he writes such emotion. Then the next song is a fun luvin' truckin song. I'm sure if Johnny Cash were around he'd have made country radio pay attention to Dale and get play time where credit is due. I am confused with one new song by The Bellamy Brothers......Don't get me wrong I like it alot.... But if you can play they're NEW stuff at regular times then why cant we hear The new stuff by Dwight Yokum and Vince Gill was up for country album of the year last year. Why don't you put it up to the listeners to decide if they want to hear Dale Watson?....like you did for the dixie chicks( Goodbye Earl)? By the way I keep hearing "PURE COUNTRY" for WJVL's jingle. I believe they need to find time to fit more "PURE COUNTRY" in than on no repeat Thurs. and Sundays 'til 5.!!!

I was just over on another forum where they asked for people's favorite country song and someone from Boston listed Dale Watson's "Juke Box Charlie". Reading about him twice in one day on totally separate forums means I guess I really should give him a listen...

Sugar I could not agree with you more. Dale Watson is the real deal! He is not your corprate country star by any means. He is one of the few out there that proudly carry on the tradional country sound. Smooth voice and a down right killer guitar player ( how 'bout that telecaster) and his band "The Lone Stars" are about as good as it gets. No hired studio guns here, just great guys who play great country songs. Just some good 'ole honky tonk music. Sugar is right he aint no Kenny, Keith or (p.u) rascal flatts he is just "the real deal" Thanks for listening i'm out! p.s would it kill you to play some Foghat?!
