UFC Fighting...or not?

UFC Fighting...or not?

By Mike Austin ( Contact )   March 25, 2008

I've knocked this around (pun intended)for days now and still haven't decided what to do. My 16 year old son, David, is a HUGE fan of UFC cage fighting. This is the stuff where 2 guys get into a chain link fence octagon and punch, kick, elbow each other. There ARE some rules and the fighters generally respect each other. This is NOT like professional wrestling. Since David is such a fan, I started getting into it and I have to admit...I like watching the matches. My son is not a huge guy, 125 lbs. But he works out every day (bench press about 230lbs) and plays football and will try wrestling next year. He has found a small group in Northern Illinois, that train together and promote amateur fights. I will be meeting with the owner of the gym this weekend to check it out for myself, in David's interest. But, I am torn on letting him get in the ring. I have been told that David has a lot of heart and talent. He is ravenous to try this out. I have always told him (and all my kids) that if you have a dream or idea, to nurture it and try new things, but UFC fighting, even on an amateur level, seems too over the top...on the other hand...if it's legit and it's David's dream, a big part of me says "go for it" and if youdon't like it, at least you gave it a shot. Now I have never and will never partent my kids by committe, but I'm interested in your thoughts.

There is a martial arts studio in Janesville that has MMA(mixed martial arts) classes. There are a couple of guys in the class that are actually MMA fighters and are fairly good at what they do. Maybe you should check it out!
