I Can't Find The Right Hole!
I decided to change the oil in my motorcycle yesterday. I'm taking a vacation that will put a lot of miles on my bike so I figured I'd tackle the task myself instead of taking my bike to Kutter's to have it done. I've changed the oil in different cars over the years, although, admittedly, I now just take my vehicle to the closest oil change place. But I do have a fair amount of mechanical experience. I've restored vehicles, I've tinkered with them since before I could drive. Plus, I should be fairly mechanical through osmosis. Every guy in my family has worked on or raced cars for as long as I can remember. So changing oil in a V-twin should be a piece of cake right...well not so fast. Keep in mind, since I'm pretty sure of myself around engines I certainly don't want to take the time to read a manual. I don't need no "stinkin'" instructions! After taking out 2 plugs that only allowed ounces of oil to drain from my crankcase and worrying if I was wrecking my '06 Street Glide, I finally broke down and (no I never did read the manual) called my Dad. I had to have him come over to my house and point out the proper plug to remove to drain the 3 1/2 quarts of oil plus offer a little instruction on removing the filter. Of course the plug is the most difficult one under the bike to remove! So, if you're looking for your drain plug on a Harley, just go to the one that's the biggest pain to remove and there you go! Going to Kutter's sounds like a pretty good idea now!
