Homework

Homework

By Ken Scott ( Contact )   February 27, 2008

I'm curious. Regardless of what school system. If you have a student in...let's say grades 4 to 8...do you think they have more homework than you did as a kid? My daughter is a 6th grader and we(her mom and I) spend a fair amount of time helping her with homework. I don't remember having that much at that grade level.

My daughter was a 5th grader in Evansville this year and well, homework? What's that. She should have had homework; her only homework was reading 20 minutes a day. The child will have a rude awakening come middle school next year. She had more homework in third and fourth grade.

We just spent an hour doing homework tonight!
Ask me any cause, symptom and treatment for pneumonia. The positive is that I sure am getting smarter!

Teachers have told me that the guideline for homework is 10 mins. for each grade starting with kindergarten. Which is fine at that age. Reading a couple books at bedtime each night takes that long. You do that math, by sixth grade thats over an hour long. Kids need to be kids and decompress as much as adults do. I don't remember homework until 6th grade. Whatever happened to those good ole days?????

As a kid, I seem to remember having time in class to do assignments. The only time there was homework was when you couldn't get it done during school.

My kids also seem to bring piles of work home. There was a stretch in 4th grade when they both sat and worked from the time they got home till bedtime. It was miserable.

I am a single mom with daughters in 3rd & 4th grade. Most nights I feel that from the time I get home from work (at 4pm) til betime (8pm) it is a constant stream of homework. It is frustrating. I understand the reasoning behind giving homework, but I feel they can cut back or only send homework home 2-3 days per week.
