Mr. Mom

Mr. Mom

As you probably know (from the photo above) I'm a 'new' dad. What you may not know however, is that I've been able to spend my mornings with Mallory. I'm not exactly a stay-at-home Dad, but pretty close. Work has been gracious enough to "adjust" my old hours so that I can do this.

I know what you're thinking; "But J.B. you only work 4 hours a day, right?" Wrong. Many don't know the 'behind the scenes' work all of us announcers put in. There's much more than just our shows "On Air."

I use to work 10a to 6pm. The 1st part of my day was recording commercials, client recordings as well as creating and producing many of the station promos, jingles and liners that you hear in between the music on WJVL. The last part of my day was my Show from 2pm to 6pm.

Today its slightly different. Thanks to technology, I'm able to record some of my commercials and other work at home (when Mallory is sleeping), I get to the station after 1pm, jump on the air at 2pm and then I stay here at work later. This schedule has worked out very well for me. And I love the time I've been able to spend with Mallory. It's time I'll never get back.

A new survey by Career Builder.Com has found that more than a third of working dads said that they would leave their jobs IF their spouse (or significant other)'s income could comfortably support the entire family.

37% of working dads also said they are willing to take a pay cut to spend more time with their children.

42% would take a pay cut of 10% or more.

22% of working dads said their jobs have had a negative impact on their relationship with their children.

And nearly half (47%) of working dads said they spend fewer than 3 hours a day with their children during the work week.

If I can be a little self promoting for a minute, I'd like to express just how lucky I am to be able to have a job. And a job that I love, while being able to spend quality time with my daughter. More importantly, I'm lucky to be able to balance both.

It's been almost 1 year for me and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads. I hope you realize too, just how lucky you are to be a 'Dad.'

very well put. not very many parents are able to do that and wish 20 years later that they had spent more time with their kids.
