Happy Hour!

Happy Hour!

By Justin Brown ( Contact )   June 25, 2008

According to a new CareerBuilder.com survey, 21% of workers attend happy hours with their coworkers.

Among those who attend, nearly a quarter report they go to happy hour at least once a month. And while 21% of those who attend say happy hours are good for networking, 85% said happy hour did not help them get closer to someone higher up or land a better position in the company.

Here are some other results of the survey:

Why workers go to happy hour:

  • 82% to bond with their co-workers

  • 13% because they feel obligated

  • 20% to network

  • 11% to bond with their boss

  • 15% to hear the latest office gossip

Who is going to happy hour:

  • Professional and business services (35%)

  • Sales (28%)

  • Financial services (34%)

  • Healthcare (24%)

  • IT (29%)

What happens during a work happy hour:

  • 16% have bad-mouthed a co-worker or member of management.

  • 10% shared a secret about a co-worker.

  • 8% kissed a co-worker.

  • 8% drank too much and acted unprofessionally.

  • 5% shared a secret about the company.

  • 4% sang karaoke.

Hmm? Interesting. 1st off, this is Wisconsin. Do we really "need" an excuse to go to Happy Hour?

2nd, maybe it's a good thing I work until 6pm every night and don't have the luxury of going to "happy hour". I love to sing, talk to much, and haven't met a beer I didn't like, which in turn makes me talk even more! Oh boy...

Anyone brave enough to share some funny "Happy Hour" or "Business After 5" stories??

i have been to happy hour with co-workers. it has been nice beacuse it helps break the edge and you get to know people differently than how they act at work.
