Crock-Pot

Crock-Pot

By Justin Brown ( Contact )   March 5, 2008

I try and help out by making a few meals so Mary doesn't have to when she gets home from work. I've become Crock-Pot King! Even though my wife likes to call me the Crack-Pot king! Ha!

Cooking with a crock-pot is great for the winter time. You walk in the house and dinner is served! Just turn the crock-pot up on 'high', or sometimes all the way to 'off' depending on what your cooking.

Plus, being the outdoorsman I am, I've found that many wild game taste very good when cooked in a crock-pot.

I like to prepare the meal in the morning, turning the crock-pot on high. Mary, who comes home at lunch turns it down. The meal is usually always ready by the time she gets home from work.

One of the meals I've gotten pretty good at is Chili.

Now I know there are many people who take pride in their chili. So I thought it would be fun to compare some recipes. Don't look for me to be entering any contests anytime soon however.

Here's how I like to make it.

2 cans of chili beans. Pour into the crock pot.

Add 2 cans of baked beans. (w/ or w/out bacon)

I also add 1 big can of tomato soup.

Then I brown my hamburger in the skillet. Sometimes I'll use a 'chili mix' with the seasoning already mixed in. Other times I experiment. A dash of this, a dash of that.

Next I'll drain the hamburger and pour it into the crock pot stirring up all the beans, tomato and hamburger.

Next, I've tried several things. Sometimes I'll add real sliced tomatoes. Sometimes I've added some salsa. There's been times I've added some BBQ sauce. Or maybe a dash of brown sugar.

Again...it's fun to experiment and get a different taste with your chili.

Then I'll add all the seasoning I want. Chili powder. Garlic powder. Pepper. Whatever! It depends how you like it. Maybe even a dash of hot sauce.

How do you like to make chili? Anyone willing to add your recipe below?

I'm making chili tonight. I add some dried onion pieces, 1 tsp. salt, chili powder and Worcestershire sauce, 1 bay leaf, 2 (8oz.) cans tomato sauce, 16oz. can chili beans and 8oz. water to the lb. of hamburger. It doesn't make a ton so you may need to add more liquid to feed a group.

I could eat chili everyday! YUM YUM!

I have a favorite recipe at home...I'll have to post it later. It's an awesome vegetarian chili...TONS of veggies. I also have a favorite Cincinnati chili that's sure to clean out your spice rack (including the chocolate).
